New Year: Record Number of Women

Women have a lot to celebrate this new year.

There are a record number of women in office at all levels of government — from state houses to the U.S. House:

  • Almost one-third of members of Congress are women.

  • Almost one-third of all state legislators are women.

  • One-third of all statewide elected executives are women.

But, just like with all things in the new year, it’s important that we set some resolutions.

While women have made great strides in the last 10 years or so, there’s a large discrepancy that exists between the number of women in office and the number of women in the U.S. population.

Representation matters. And there’s an even larger gap in the number of center- and center-right women running for and serving in office.

According to Gallup, 69% of women self-identify as conservative or moderate.

Yet, according to the Center for American Women and Politics, only 21.4% of candidates in 2022 were center-right women. And less than 15% of women elected to statewide office are center or center-right.

Women’s Public Leadership Network was created to close that gap.

But we don’t just support women based on their gender. We are committed to getting more qualified, pragmatic, and effective women in office.

Our top resolution this year is to do outreach to, train, and inspire more center- and center-right women to run for office.
