Senator Dawn Gile was recently elected to represent the 33rd Legislative District (Anne Arundel County) in the Maryland Senate. She presently serves on the Senate Finance Committee. In addition to her service in the Senate, Senator Gile is an attorney and advocate for veterans and military families. She has long devoted her time to supporting veterans and military families, including having served as president of Military Spouse JD Network, an organization that works to expand employment opportunities for military spouses and provides free legal assistance to Gold Star families and veteran caregivers. Additionally, Senator Gile is an experienced attorney, representing businesses in litigation in Maryland and the District of Columbia for the past 15 years. She earned her J.D. from Loyola University Chicago School of Law and her B.A., Phi Beta Kappa with high honors, from Rockford University, where she currently serves on the Board of Trustees. Following a rigorous application process, Senator Gile’s leadership and potential for public office were recognized with selection for the LBJ Women’s Campaign School at the University of Texas at Austin, a program dedicated to training more women to run for public office.

[Maureen McInerney, WPLN]: Tell us a little bit about your decision to run. What motivated you, and what did you hope to accomplish in office?
[Senator Dawn Gile]: As a military family, serving our country and giving back to our community has always been a core value. For a significant period of time, I have been a vocal supporter of enhancing the employment opportunities available to military spouses and have long recognized the importance of addressing critical issues such as access to affordable childcare, paid family leave, and empowering women in the workforce. My dedication to these issues stems from a recognition of the unique challenges that military families face and the vital role that supportive policies play in enabling them to thrive. These issues not only affect civilians but also pose unique challenges for military families due to the frequent moves and geographic instability associated with military life.
The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the existing disparities in our society and the disproportionate impact on women leaving the workforce was particularly alarming. Witnessing firsthand the struggles faced by families due to shortages in childcare and the absence of paid family and medical leave, I felt a strong call to action. The frustration I felt at the time was the driving force behind my decision to run for office, with the aim of enacting meaningful change that would benefit all families.
I firmly believe that every individual should have access to equal opportunities to succeed and thrive, regardless of their background or circumstances. As a public servant, my goal is to bring my personal experience, my passion for advocacy, and my commitment to creating a better future for all, to my work in office. I am determined to work towards a brighter and more equitable future, where everyone has access to the resources and support they need to succeed.
What was that conversation like with your family as you were making this decision?
As my campaign progressed, the conversation with my husband about the level of commitment it required also evolved over time. Although he was active duty for the majority of my campaign, I was fortunate that he was retiring from the Army, which lightened my load and allowed me to fully focus on my campaign. Despite the anticipated challenges, such as the difficulty of campaigning, my husband wholeheartedly supported my decision to give back to our community. We even joked about how my campaign and public service were now my "deployment." We also had a conversation with our children about the importance of public service and the sacrifices it entails, including missing out on events like soccer games and school activities. Although there were moments of difficulty and sadness along the way, my children have been my biggest supporters and my cheerleaders.
Do your kids participate in any aspects of your campaign? How about as you’re serving in office?
Yes, my older daughters actively participated in my campaign by accompanying me on door-knocking rounds, walking with me in parades, and attending various campaign events. They were also present at my swearing-in ceremony and visited me at my office after I took office.
Were there any difficult situations that you had to overcome in regards to balancing your public service and family life?
While navigating both the legislative session and my campaign, I've had to prioritize my time and rely heavily on the support of my husband. I recognize the burden this has placed on my family, particularly my spouse, and I am deeply grateful for his unwavering support. In addition, we have been incredibly fortunate to have a wonderful childcare provider, an au pair, who has shown our children love and care. Moreover, our friends and neighbors have been an incredible source of support, stepping in to pick up our children from school or providing rides to events when we are unable to do so. Their support has been invaluable.
What advice would you give, or a piece of wisdom you wish you’d known?
If you are considering a campaign for public service, it's important to recognize that the road ahead will not be an easy one. Campaigning and serving in public office demand a lot from you, both personally and professionally, and can have a significant impact on your family. However, it's important to stay focused on your reasons for running and to remind yourself frequently of the positive impact that your service can have on your community, your family, and future generations. Stay true to your values, and remember that your voice is critical in shaping the future.
How are you celebrating Mother’s Day this year?
On Mother's Day, I plan to spend quality time with my family, ideally outdoors, perhaps on our sailboat, weather permitting.
