What WPLN is Reading, Watching, Listening to, and Excited For: February Edition

READING | The Three Mothers: How the Mothers of Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcolm X, and James Baldwin Shaped a Nation by Anna Malaika Tubbs: "These three extraordinary women [Berdis Baldwin, Alberta King, and Louise Little] passed their knowledge to their children with the hope of helping them to survive in a society that would deny their humanity from the very beginning―from Louise teaching her children about their activist roots, to Berdis encouraging James to express himself through writing, to Alberta basing all of her lessons in faith and social justice. These women used their strength and motherhood to push their children toward greatness, all with a conviction that every human being deserves dignity and respect despite the rampant discrimination they faced." WATCHING | WandaVision, starring Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Bettany, and Kathryn Hahn: WandaVision is a Disney+ miniseries set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and based around the Avenger characters Wanda Maximoff and Vision. Though the show premise itself is still a mystery, we've appreciated the subtle ways it seems to subvert stereotypical male and female roles in television, and the women are the ones whose performances really shine: Olsen and Hahn's performances have been excellent (and we think both have the talent to pull off playing Lucille Ball in an upcoming I Love Lucy drama!), as have those of Teyonah Parris and Kat Dennings. Watch it here.

LISTENING TO | Policy and Pound Cak‪e‬ by the Bass Sisters: Deana Bass Williams and WPLN Board Member Dee Dee Bass Wilbon (#TheBassSisters) share weekly wisdom on politics and culture. The inaugural season of Policy and Pound Cake focuses on increasing the marketplace of ideas and the power of capitalism. Listen here.

EXCITED FOR | The "From the Ground Up" State Network, powered by ReflectUS coalition members: This month, ReflectUS announced the launch of “From the Ground Up” State Network, which will introduce and advocate for legislative and policy initiatives on a local, state and national level that will increase access to political leadership for working-class women. WPLN is looking forward to seeing the results, and we're thrilled that ReflectUS is supporting more women across the country! Learn more here.
