Remember the Ladies: February Edition

Throughout history, women's achievements have often been downplayed or overlooked.

As part of WPLN's efforts to empower women, we aim to recognize the women who came before us.

Here's what women in the past accomplished during the month of February throughout history:

  • FEBRUARY 1, 1853 | In Providence, Rhode Island, suffragist and abolitionist Paulina Kellogg Wright Davis launches The Una, which is acknowledged as the first feminist newspaper of the women's rights movement.
  • FEBRUARY 14, 1920 | The League of Women Voters is founded in Chicago, Illinois.
  • FEBRUARY 27, 1922 | In the case Leser v. Garnett, the U.S. Supreme Court upholds the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, which recognizes women's right to vote.
  • FEBRUARY 4, 1987 | President Ronald Reagan signs Proclamation 5606 declaring the day "National Women in Sports Day."
