Women’s Public Leadership Network (WPLN) is featuring stories from mothers seeking or serving in public office to celebrate Mother’s Day. WPLN's Director of Development, Maureen McInerney, interviewed Nicole Chavez of New Mexico’s House District 28.
Nicole Chavez had spent her life caring for her three children—Jaydon, Kennedy, and Joseph—in Northeast Albuquerque and building a successful career in healthcare, until a senseless act of violence claimed the life of her oldest son, Jaydon. Nicole fought for justice for her son and began advocating at legislative sessions in January 2016; she then created a nonprofit organization to bring together other families victimized by violence across New Mexico. Now, she is running to represent House District 28 in the legislature. Nicole raised her family in the Albuquerque Public School system, and she served as the PTA president of Jackson Middle School for four years.
