Women’s Public Leadership Network (WPLN) is excited to continue our podcast series, “Tips From The Trail,” hosted by WPLN Founder & President Larissa Martinez, where we explore the path to political office, from the decision to run to election day.
In our latest episode, we’re excited to be joined by June Cutter, a long-time friend and supporter of WPLN. After a nearly 20-year career as a civil litigator and a notable 2020 State Assembly campaign that launched her as a Republican rising star, June continues to serve by equipping leaders with the skills they need to succeed. Today, she heads Highland-Illuminate, a top fundraising firm, and specializes in individual branding.
Before embarking on a run for office, it's crucial to ask yourself: Who are you, and what do you want to be known for? What cause do you want to champion? June emphasized the importance of owning your narrative and personal brand. As she wisely put it, "If you're not talking about yourself, other people will do it for you, and you may not like it."
To effectively build your individual brand, the 4 c’s will be the building blocks:
- Clarity: Be known for something, not everything.
- Consistency: You have to keep doing it. Consistent communication with your audience builds credibility.
- Content: Be authentic, share your story, and present it well.
- Communication: Consider how you're sharing your message and on which platforms. This is how you will be remembered.
June emphasized the importance of sharing your accomplishments and life experiences in a way that truly connects with your audience. "You shouldn't be afraid to let people know that you're qualified. It's not just to impress people, it's to connect with people and show how you can help. The purpose is to connect."
And finally, when it comes to styling and branding yourself, stay authentic. “Instead of chasing trends, chase authenticity,” June said, and encouraged listeners to prioritize developing a personal style that feels comfortable and genuinely reflects them. “People listen to you when you look confident and competent.”
