Throughout history, women's achievements have often been downplayed or overlooked.
As part of WPLN's efforts to empower women, we aim to recognize the women who came before us.
Here's what women in the past accomplished during the month of June throughout history:
- JUNE 17, 1865: Susan La Flesche Picotte is born on this day; she would later become the first Native American physician.
- JUNE 10, 1866: Frances Lillian Willard "Fannie" Munds is born on this day; she would later become a member of the Arizona Senate, 5 years before the 19th Amendment was ratified.
- JUNE 17, 1873: Women's rights leader Susan B. Anthony was tried for voting illegally; she was convicted and fined $100 (which she never paid).
- JUNE 11, 1880: Jeannette Rankin is born on this day; she would later become the first woman elected to Congress, 4 years before the 19th Amendment was ratified.
- JUNE 5, 1987: Dr. Mae Jemison becomes the first Black woman astronaut.
