**READING | *U.S. First Ladies: Making History and Leaving Legacies*, by Diana B Carlin, Anita B McBride, and Nancy Kegan Smith:** The U.S. has had 43 official first ladies, with an additional 11 serving in an unofficial capacity. Although first ladies themselves aren't elected, they still help to influence the country. [This book examines the role of the first lady](https://www.amazon.com/U-S-First-Ladies-History-Legacies/dp/1793545243/ref=sr_1_1?qid=1701097661&refinements=p_27%3ADiana%20B%20Carlin&s=books&sr=1-1&text=Diana%20B%20Carlin&ufe=app_do%3Aamzn1.fos.304cacc1-b508-45fb-a37f-a2c47c48c32f&utm_source=hs_email&utm_medium=email&_hsenc=p2ANqtz-_q1LKn_q-Zx4j-s16cHFLkY48Rgd6Pyzv3n3oAxocTV2GdNHk51SPMBrhu9S8xaivCYq9goQ-90HYMkvofoukJQBZz-w) and how it's evolved throughout history.

**WATCHING | *Nyad* on Netflix: ***Nyad* stars Annette Bening as Diana Nyad, an American swimmer [trying to swim more than 100 miles](https://www.netflix.com/title/81447231?utm_source=hs_email&utm_medium=email&_hsenc=p2ANqtz-_q1LKn_q-Zx4j-s16cHFLkY48Rgd6Pyzv3n3oAxocTV2GdNHk51SPMBrhu9S8xaivCYq9goQ-90HYMkvofoukJQBZz-w) from Cuba to Florida without a shark cage. However, controversy surrounds Diana's achievement.

**LISTENING TO | Britney Spears' memoir *The Woman in Me*, narrated by Michelle Williams:** It's not just women in politics who face unfair coverage — and Britney Spears' memoir highlights how damaging it is when society insists women be put into boxes. [The audiobook version is narrated by actress Michelle Williams](https://www.amazon.com/Audible-Untitled-Memoir-OMT/dp/B0BRBPSXCW?utm_source=hs_email&utm_medium=email&_hsenc=p2ANqtz-_q1LKn_q-Zx4j-s16cHFLkY48Rgd6Pyzv3n3oAxocTV2GdNHk51SPMBrhu9S8xaivCYq9goQ-90HYMkvofoukJQBZz-w), and she'll likely be nominated for a Grammy Award (in the Best Audio Book, Narration & Storytelling Recording category) — [*Variety *calls the narration her "latest brilliant performance."](https://variety.com/2023/music/columns/britney-spears-the-woman-in-me-audiobook-michelle-williams-review-1235768333/?utm_source=hs_email&utm_medium=email&_hsenc=p2ANqtz-_q1LKn_q-Zx4j-s16cHFLkY48Rgd6Pyzv3n3oAxocTV2GdNHk51SPMBrhu9S8xaivCYq9goQ-90HYMkvofoukJQBZz-w)
